The Rumsey Woods Project (May 22, 2010)

This past Saturday, more than 35 dedicated volunteers from Buffalo 360, Young CPA’s of Western NY, The Freed Maxick and Battaglia firm, NorthEastern Exteriors, and the Buffalo B-Team, worked together over four hours to clear an acre of invasive plants, restore hidden pathways, create a new flower bed and plant native trees and wildflowers in the Rumsey Woods section of Delaware Park.

Volunteers planted Red Maple Trees, Red Fir, Wild Geraniums and Sneeze Weed to help restore the natural environment in Rumsey Woods.

This section of Delaware Park hasn’t seen a strong volunteer showing in years and we really appreciate the hard work that went into this part of the park.

St. Francis volunteers in South Park

On Tuesday November 10th Olmsted had 28 students and 3 St. Francis Faculty members come out for an environmental restoration project in South Park. We restored the forested area by removing invasive plants, picking up garbage and clearing old brush that was a fire hazard from the work site.

Eric Mower & Associates

On Thursday, August 20th, Eric Mower and Associates participated in a volunteer project at Delaware Park's Rumsey Woods. Eric Mower and Associates is a marketing communications firm located in Buffalo, NY. The aim of this project was to remove invasive European Buckthorn and grape vines from the area allowing native species to repopulate instead. During the 3 hour volunteer project a large area in the woods was cleared of these species. For more information on Eric Mower and Associates visit www.mower.com

Day of Caring

On Wednesday, August 19th, HSBC bank in conjunction with the United Way and the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy took part in the National Day of Caring. Approximately 125 volunteers helped to remove hundreds of invasive European Buckthorn trees in South Park. European Buckthorn is a rapid growing plant that is not indigenous to this area and out competes native species for sunlight and nutrients in the soil. All about Roses!
is a FREE weekly workshop about how to grow and care for roses. Hosted by the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy under the direction of Rosarian David Swanka.

By any other name…

A rose is a perennial flowering shrub or vine of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over one hundred species within this family and the flowers come in a multitude of shapes, colors and scents.

The Historic Rose Garden adjacent to the Marcy Casino has an extensive collection of roses from all over the world. Built in 1919 the Delaware Park Rose Garden has been the scene for hundreds of weddings and thousands of meetings. Prize winning rose varieties are prominently displayed in a formal planting framed by a classic architectural pergola.

If you would like to learn about roses, their care, cultivation and how to create your own rose beds at home the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s All About Roses! Workshop will provide you with professional rose care training within our historic rose garden.

July 22nd Falk School Clean Up

On July 22nd our friends from the Stanley G. Falk School came to the Parkside Lodge at Delaware Park to learn about recycling, nature, and protecting the environment. Later on in the day the students receieved a walking tour of the park where they participated in a litter pick up!

Frederick Law Olmsted Gala!

The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is currently looking for volunteers to help out during our Olmsted Gala on Friday, July 17th at Riverside Park. Volunteers will be needed for a variety of jobs including table & chair set-up, answering FAQ's, and wine dispension. May 9th Tree Plantings

Buffalo Games Cazenovia Park Work Day

On Wednesday May 6th Buffalo Games partnered with The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy for a restoration project in Cazenovia Park in South Buffalo. Community Day is a part of Buffalo Game's mission to give back to the Buffalo Region and this year their project within Cazenovia Park was multi faceted. Over the course of 3 hours, more than 70 volunteers painted, weeded, mulched the grounds and engaged in a creekside restoration project along Cazenovia Creek. Over six weeks worth of work was completed in that 3 hour period. Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy provided coffee, bagels and muffins while Buffalo Games provided a catered lunch.

Maria Whyte & Black Rock Neighbors!

On May 4th Maria and members of the Black Rock neighborhood pitched in to paint the Shelter House at Riverside Park along with members of the Olmsted Parks Staff. On Sat. April 25th the local branch of the Center for Inquiry in Amherst, NY came out to show their support for the Buffalo Olmsted Parks in a trash clean-up around Hoyt Lake and in Rumsey Woods.

April 18th at Hoyt Lake

On April 18th the Buffalo Olmsted Parks helped the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeepers beautify Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park. We removed 6 tons of trash and debris from the water and had a great time doing it! Check out the photos below and remember, there are always volunteer opportunities available with Olmsted!
